Book Review: The Imperfect Disciple.

The Imperfect Disciple: Grace For People Who Can’t Get Their Act Together

By: Jared C. Wilson

OH YAY! A book on how to love those crazy people who can't get their acts together... and about 12 pages in, I realised I am that person.

I am so excited to share this book with you, I love when I get to read a book and it impacts my life in a positive way. Take a gander below at my review. I love this book. I think you might too!

Share the love,

Ever thought you’re the only one who doesn’t have their act together? Can’t get their lives figured out? Well the great reality is you are not, I am not, we are not. We are the norm, we are the ones who fall short, the ones who suck at stuff, and the ones who are sensitive enough to realize by ourselves we will never measure up. But thank goodness we don’t have to do it by ourselves.
Many people view discipleship as, chilling with a laid back, berkenstock clad, Jesus while he tells stories … But is that really what discipleship is?
This book moves into the messiness of discipleship, not the Sunday school version of what we’ve been taught. It’s deep, it’s profound, yet simple. Maybe it’s just that it’s never been laid out this way for me before.
When I first read the title of this book, I thought, “oh perfect, skills and grace for loving those other people who can’t get their acts together”… only to be gently guided into realizing I am that person. I’m the one who can’t get there act together, I’m that girl. I’m the one that needs more grace than anyone, and it’s true. Maybe I was just afraid of saying it out loud, I’ve known all along that I need Jesus… but which Jesus do I need? The Sunday School version of Jesus or The Jesus At The Well, prodding, questioning, loving on purpose. I’m in need of the one who pursues me, not someone just timidly waiting for me to let Him in, I’m in need of the one who is knocking, not just a docile, “well maybe she isn’t home” knocking, but a persistent, relentless pursuit knocking…
This book hast taken me on a journey into the depth of discipleship, relationship, and grace. If you are that person, the one who falls short, feels like they suck at stuff, you are not alone, you are in good company. I’d encourage you to take a read…

One Sip at a Time.

A lot is happening on our side of the world and nothing is happening on our side of the world. Maybe that is why I don't seem to be able to put any of it into words.

Our adventures continue, and life is normal, and I am creating, making patterns, taking classes, learning Vietnamese and all that jazz...  and above and beyond all of that I have found myself blessed with a group of women friends here that I do not think I would have survived the past year without...
So I will just leave this here for you all to enjoy, because I know this to be true: Friendship grows, one sip at a time...

Share this with your sit, and sip friends :)

Beach Please?!

It's coming to that time of year when we all have to take a gander at our pasty legs, and our not so beach body ready beach bodies... and think, oh man.... not this again. Yes this again, but this year folks let's make it different- make it different for ourselves, make it different for your kids, make it different for our hubbies, your boyfriends, our best friends.

What would happen if we just suited up,  showed up, and enjoyed ourselves?

I know the world would literally end, right?! Because every year for the past 15 years we've had an excuse why you can't go to the beach, why you can't play with the kids in the water, why you're 'cold' at the beach, I get it...  me too-

Except... this past year living in Vietnam, when every day is beach weather day, and every day I am twice* the size of the largest Vietnamese person in the room, by height and weight... What am I going to do? Hide? ok, somedays I hide, somedays I just can't do it, but then other days, I suit up, I strut up, I set up, and I lounge about the pool... and you know what... no one cares... no one cares that I have cellulite, no one cares that I'm taller than they are, no one cares that I weight more than they do... they aren't there to worry about me, trust me, even the littlest and the tiniest, and the most beautiful are focused and worrying about themselves. Because for years we've been fed story after story, photo after photo, of unrealistic expectations of what we can be if we use this product -we will be just like the person modelling it-But guess what, it's hog-wash.

We are so wrapped up in what we aren't instead of being wrapped up in who we are... my body tells a beautiful story of pain, heart ache, joy, gratitude, and grace... after losing 100 pounds about 12 years ago I weighed 150 pounds for about 5 weeks... then I steadied back at about 165 and you know what, I was more concerned with my imperfections at that weight then I am now 40 pounds heavier. Forty, not fourteen, but four-zero, forty pounds heavier, I gained 10 pounds on every one of our four IVF treatments, I fought through a deep depression dealing with unfulfilled hopes and dreams of babies, I'm pretty sedentary at work- painting and creating happens at a desk usually- But guess what... that is not the sum of who I am, those are things I've been trough and I carry the battle scars, maybe not as proudly as I ought too, but I try.

So this year ladies and gents, let's take our beach bodies, just as they are, suit up, and rock on. Take the photo, do a cannon ball, dance on the boardwalk, smile at strangers, and be grateful that we can do all of these things... let's worry less about others, let's not let them dictate our lives... just know, you are perfect in every imperfection of your being...

Just think, how much more we could be doing in our lives, and with our lives,  if we weren't so bound up in chains created to keep us uneasy, un happy, un fulfilled, nervous, cautious, and scared of what others will think. Break off the chains, today is a new day, SUIT UP!

Roll Me In Fairy Dust

In 8 days I'll be turning 39. This is going to be one heck of a year to remember... I think.  I am in a weird place of limbo in so many areas of life and in other areas I am on it! I'm excited and anxious, yet comfortable and at peace, all at the same time. I feel like something new is coming, but when and what, who knows, and yet I feel if nothing happens I am good with that too. It's weird. But what I am leaning is that this is life. It's fun, it's scary, and it's all wrapped up in a big old bag of unknown. Every decision we make can change the course of our future, one tiny moment, one decision we don't think much about can alter the course of our lives. Isn't that awesome?

So this year, I am celebrating the unknown! I'm celebrating every silver streak in my hair, every ounce of chub on my body and every laugh line around my eyes- and all y'all can roll me in fairy dust and call me a unicorn!

If you are needing a little extra love today, this one is for you... We'll roll you up in fairy dust and call you a unicorn too!

If you can be anything, be a unicorn. Trust me.
